Schedule 1 line 8z item appearing but not in income entries

On the Review screen, I was prompted to enter a value for an item that was showing up on Schedule 1 line 8z. But, the item showing there isn't something I entered this year, it's an item from last year's return. I double checked all my income entries for 2023 and do not see it there. How can I resolve this or is it safe to just enter a 0 value and move on?

I suggest you review your return from the previous year to discover what the entry represents. It is rare, but a net operating loss carryover (where you have more business losses than non-business income) could result in a carryover to that line on your tax return. If so, it may be a correct entry.

Line 8(z) on schedule 1 would be an entry for "other income". It would normally be an entry of income for the current year and typically be something you would enter as opposed to being entered automatically by the program. It often comes from an entry on a Form 1099-Misc or occasionally a Form 1099-NEC or maybe a Form 1099-K. Otherwise it would typically come from an entry you made. If you are sure it is not reportable income you can enter $0 for it.

Thanks for the quick reply! It was crypto income entered last year. I double checked all the 1099 entries for this year and none show it. It seems like maybe it is a bug where the entry data was only partially deleted when I removed the carryover record for this year.

Just to be safe - do you know whether there's any way to edit the forms before filing so I can just remove this line?

It looks like you are using the windows versions, so you can use Forms Mode to edit.   Just click on Forms at the top.    Also, sometimes a $0 gets stuck, so try to remove the Supporting Details statement if one was transferred from last year.

If the grayed out field has a $0 stuck, try to either:

  • Right-click on the field with the $0 and choose Supporting Details or
  • Click on Edit at the top and choose Supporting Details.

Clear out anything carried over from last year; delete all the fields, or use the Red X to remove each line item.   Sometimes a $0 gets stuck in the supporting details' worksheet when using the Windows version of TurboTax.   Usually, removing the supporting details allows successful e-filing.
