ROTH IRA early Distribution and received a 10099R which shows code J, which is non qualifing distribution, However, its a qualifying distribution because I used after tax constributions so I thought I wouldn't be taxed again the principal amount.

I took an early Roth IRA Distribution for tax year 2024 and received a 1099R using code J which is a non qualifying distribution.  However, I feel since I contributed after tax dollars to the my Roth IRA, this should be categorized as a Code Q, qualifying distribution.

Your 1099-R is coded J in box 7 as you must be aged less than 59 1/2. Your broker does not keep track of all your Roth IRA contributions (as you may have several Roth IRA accounts).

As a distribution of prior contributions is not taxable, you'll need to enter your prior years' Roth IRA contributions.

After you have entered your form 1099-R, TurboTax will take you back to the summary page titled Your 1099-R Entries.

On that page, click Continue and follow the TurboTax interview until you arrive at the page titled Enter Prior Year Roth IRA Contributions where you can enter the amount of your past contributions.

As answered in another thread where you posted the same question, this is a nonqualified distribution that is required to be reported on Form 8606 Part III where it will be determined to be a nontaxable distribution of contribution basis (not a qualified distribution).
