Retiring overseas

I plan to retire overseas and spend more than 50% of my time there. I plan to keep my house in WA and another house in CA, either as rentals or as my second home. Is there a requirement that I still declare a primary residence within the US? If so, I would likely keep WA as my primary residence due to no state tax.

Your residence is the one with the  RE  homestead exemption on it.   If you do rent the CA home then you will need to file a non resident CA return for that income.
