The rejection code IND-517 is used when a dependent's social security number has been claimed on another return as a taxpayer or spouse. Often this happens when a dependent files their own return and does not indicate that someone else can claim them as a dependent.
In order to fix this, you would have to print, sign & mail your tax return. The person who erroneously claimed the exemption should amend their return.
@dummy2019! - you are tagging on tp an unrelated 2 year old post, but that reject code means that the EIN on yiur W-2 is not known to the IRS.

I get the error, but have verified my son (who I am claiming) did NOT claim himself as a dependent...I can see he checked the box stating someone else can claim him...I also viewed the form that was sent to IRS...he also used TurboTax....what else could it be as this makes no sense.
Could this possibly mean that someone fraudulently claimed my child on their taxes?
I had the same issue, my dependants did check that someone else could claim them on their return
Yeah me too. reject 527 code, but my so & daughter DID FILE as dependents on another (my) filing
What is the proper sequencing of correcting this. Can I mail in my return right away, while at the same time, my son is amending his return? Or do I need to have his amended return processed complete, before I move forward? If I do need to wait, do I need to request an extension? Or?
I just got an email that my return was bounced with a link to click, but the link did nothing but take me to the main page. I just happened to luck onto this page, but the link in the email should have directed me here. Horrible customer service.
I have a baby born last year, when I added her as dependent, I got this error. I am pretty sure no one else has added her as dependent and she obviously has not filed for herself. What should I do?
So, we amended my son's return, but do I have to wait for that to be accepted?
@BRGSJG - No, but you must print and mail your return. The IRS will not allow another e-file with the same SSN this year. It also take up to 4 months to process an amended return.
Amended returns do not "accept". The IRS will only return an amended return if it is not signed or does not have the required W-2's or 1099's with tax withholding attached.
A amended (1040X) return can only be mailed - never e-filed.
Thank you! I'm so stressed that I made this stupid mistake. If I owe, do I include a check because Turbo Tax won't be charging my card, I assume.
If you owe, you can pay by check, direct debit, direct, or Credit Card.

I have this problem and checked my (16) ?year olds son's taxes, which was filed on Turbo Tax and I checked the box that someone could claim him as a dependent, so what is the problem
