Refund Applied to Estimated Taxes Not Updating Vouchers

I see this problem asked a few times but no solutions for me. I want to apply a refund to my estimated taxes. I enter the refund on the 1040/1040SR Wks and that updates my 1040 (as an aside why does one have to enter this manually, it should have to option to just apply refund). But this does not affect the Estimated Tax vouchers nor does it carry over to the Est Tax Options where there is a line for Last year's overpayment you apply to this year (which can't be entered manually). I know there is a solution as I ran into this problem before but it escapes me what it is.

Thanks for any help.

This is found when you file your return, or you can use the Topic Search below.

 Select Tax Tools

  • You may have to minimize both the Federal and State options by clicking the Down Arrows on the Sidebar.
  • You will then clearly see Tax Tools
  • Click the arrow to up to see additional options
  1. Once you can work on Tax Tools
  2. On the drop-down select Tools
  3. There will be 3 or 4 green boxes
  4. Select Topics Search
  5. Type Apply
  6. Apply federal refund to next year
  7. Continue through the interview.

Well the response looks like it might be directed at the online version because  none of the description of the procedure matches what I see in my software. Nonetheless there was a clue in there that let me search to find the spot to modify to make things work so mission accomplished. Thanks.
