Question about Colorado State W4: Total Allowances

I am starting a new job and filling out my state and federal tax withholding information. For the Colorado state tax withholding, it asks me to fill in a box called "Total Allowances" but gives no information about what is supposed to go in the box. None of this information is filled out directly onto the actual state form, but it is done through an HR system with boxes to simplify the process so I cannot see any information on what it means by allowances. I will be filing as single if that makes any difference. Can anyone offer any guidance on this? Thanks in advance!

Click on the following link to download DR 0004 - Colorado Employee Withholding Certificate with instructions.  If you are single with only one job and no dependents, it will be a very simple form to fill out.  You will be able to see what the allowances are and determine what you should enter.

Once you start getting paid, if you think you are having too much or too little tax withheld (federal or state) you can complete a new withholding form to change it.
