Qualifying Dependent for the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit?

My child is 18 and I claimed them as a dependent.  On the 3rd recovery check we received $2800 for both myself and my spouse.  Turbo tax gave us a $1400 credit for my dependent.  The IRS is now saying my dependent did not qualify....WHY?

did you 18 year old fill out a tax return (could have been for 2020 or 2021) and NOT check the box that they could be claimed by others? is that the problem?

Did you each get IRS letter 6475 saying how much you got?  They should have sent you  4,200 (1400x3) based on your 2019 or 2020 return.  You should each each get a letter for half 2100.  Did you claim your child on 2020 or 2019?

Many taxpayers (and not just Turbotax customers) made errors on their 2021 returns.  As of April 7, the IRS had issued 9.4 million math error notices – and 8.3 million of these notices were related to the recovery rebate and the child tax credit.
