Purpose of getting extension to file taxes after Palisades fire

My house burned down in the Palisades fire. I heard that I can get a delay in filing until October. Not sure how I do this. Do I need to file a form of some sort? And if I'm ready to file my taxes, why not just file away? What's the benefit? I don't otherwise earn any interest on money that sits in my checking account.

The benefit ia meant to make it easier on those left homeless or unable to pay their taxes befoe October 15.

For someone who wants the extension until October, what do they have to do? File some sort of form?

If your zip code is in the disaster area, the extension is automatic. It may not extend to Oct 15.

To get the full extension you have to file Form 4868 OR make a payment of $5 or more on IRS direct pay, select "EXTENSION"
