Property Tax Entry Not Working

Turbo Tax Support,

I'm experiencing a defect in the feature for entering Property Tax information.

When I click the "Property Tax" section on the "Deductions and Credits" screen, the screen shows "Checking for Property (Real Estate) Tax Deduction". I wait and nothing happens and there is no indication of progress (see screenshot below). When I click "Enter Info" I am returned to the "Deductions and Credits" screen without explanation.

A similar issue was reported in this ticket from 3 weeks ago. Others have resorted to manually entering property tax information directly into the Schedule A form. That workaround should not be necessary. The quality and usability of this user interface is poor and this defect is a significant regression.  Please release an update with the fix as soon as possible so your users can finish 2024 taxes without interruption.

Thank you.

If you return to your mortgage entry screen and remove the property tax there, it will unlock the property tax section so you can enter all of the property taxes. This is the best solution for now. Those with only one property tax are not affected by the entry with the mortgage.

The only way I could enter my property taxes was on the Mortgage page.  I have no mortgage, so I had to fake the entries and enter the property taxes there.  How could TurboTax screw this up?  Without touching the mortgage page, it would not allow me to enter property taxes on the property tax dialog.

This entry has worked for decades.  But not this year.  And support kept insisting it was due to a change in IRS rules.  I insisted that it was a bug.

In addition, going directly to Schedule A, TurboTax will not allow any entries on the real estate taxes line.

I will probably drop TurboTax next year.  I've been using it since at least 1996.  But this denial of responsibility is too much.

I've got exactly same problem.  'cept I've got no mortgage.  Same as last year.  2024 imported 2023 taxes and SHOWS the 2023 property tax entry.  But.... 2024 attempting to enter property tax comes back with a "we need a bit more info" screen, but when you select the provided "Enter Info" it just goes away.  *No response, no error, no info, no nothing*.  just back to the 2024 deductions and credits screen. 😕

I am having the same problem.

I have no mortgage.

property tax input page returns to deductions page when pencil is clicked.

This is a significant deduction that must be included.

Hi TS61

I have no mortgage either, so I faked one with $0.00 for all of the entries and the lender is "None."  I was able to enter the property taxes on that form.

This is a ridiculous response and in any event does not work it seems if you have no mortgage.  when will turbotax fix this obvious bug introduced in 2024?

Some TurboTax Desktop customers who have both mortgage and non-mortgage property taxes paid that they need to report, may experience an issue when entering 1098 first, and non-mortgage property taxes paid afterward in Credits and Deductions.

We’re currently working to resolve this issue. If you’d like to receive progress updates, sign up at this help article.

I got that too.  No 1098 for years, and none attempted this year either.

I think I figured it out, at least how to get it to work properly in the interview...at least it did for me.

(Discovered by accident, BUT the software fix to prevent the problem in the first place, is still needed though).

__________________________
If you used that Property Tax entry field last year, and if you used a Supporting Details (SD ) sheet for putting it in last year, then the SD sheet transferred (empty) into this year's forms...AND...the SD sheet is somehow blocking the "interview" for the Property Taxes entry, to transition to the proper entry page.

_______________

My fix:

1) Switch to Forms Mode.

2) Open the Tax and Interest Deduction Worksheet

3) There should be a zero on line 2a of that worksheet....double-click on it.

4) Delete the worksheet by hitting the big red

X

5) Either enter you Property taxes on that line....or...return to the interview and enter your property taxes using the interview ..as you normally would..shoud be OK now.

I found that if I re-introduced a new SD sheet for that line...the interview still proceeded as it normally should. So deleting the transferred-in SD sheet from 2023 was the main fix. and starting a new SD sheet doesn't re-introduce the problem.

Hi, I just posted that I have the same problem of not being able to enter Property (Real Estate Taxes) taxes in desktop Premier using the Step by Step method.

I found a work around.

Switch to the Forms view

go to the schedule A

Double Click on State and Local Real Estate Taxes

Tax & Int wks appears go to line 2a and enter info.

Save

Then switch view and the values will appear.

One shouldn't need to di this but it is a work around.
