problem referring a friend

I have been trying to sign up my father in law via the "share the love" promotion.

 

I enter the proper email addresses in the proper spots but when he logs on to get his emails he is getting a message something about not being able to refer  yourself. Again he and I have different email addresses and are logging on to gmail using his proper credentials but it still says the message about not referring yourself.

 

What gives???

It depends.

 

In order for the offer to be valid, the friend must also be a new TurboTax customer.  Is it possible he used the program in the past?
