Previously, when I had a 1099-misc, I wrote off my expenses without paying an extra $90 to do so. Why do I have to do that now?

Because Ituit's Evil Marketing Geniuses changed the rules.  Now trying to enter any amount of expense associated with self employment income requires an upgrade to the full Schedule C, not the Schedule C-EZ you probably filed last year.

You probably would be money ahead to download a desktop version of TT Deluxe - which will handle Schedule C and Schedule C-EZ - from Amazon or some other online retailer.
