Please help! Accidentally submitted a Non-Filer form

I am desperate and have no idea where to turn for help. I accidentally submitted a Non-Filer form and need to delete that form and file my 2019 tax return instead so I can get my refund and stimulous money. I have no idea how to correct my error and appreciate any and all assistance.

if you reported as a non-filer, don't file yet

wait until July 15.

there's no point filing now because IRS will not process your paper tax return.

if no action file a request for extension of time to file.

wait some more.

I did the same thing. I’m worried because I already submitted a non filer on accident that I now can’t efile. Should I already start doing a 1040X?

Same here, please help.

I was trying to e-file my 2019 tax form, it turned out that "a tax return with the same Social Security number has already been submitted".

Same! Did you receive any responses that would be helpful on what to do now? Will we still receive our stimulus check?

Not yet, couldn't get any info or help from the IRS these days.

if you are a taxpayer and file a tax return, it says right on the IRS page, for non-filers only

"Do NOT use this tool if you will be filing a 2019 return"

Now you will have to file a paper 2019 return via US Mail

I did the same thing on accident, so do we have to file through mail before july due date or after?

Okay understandable, we will have to mail our 2019 tax return in July. But are we still going to get the stimulus check?

SAME!!!!!!!!! I accidentally did the same thing so i could get the economic relief and provide updated direct deposit. I just tried via a tax preperation and turbo and will not go though since its saying it duplicate return..... will update (glad but sad Im not the only)

Yes. This was a mistake and it looks like I'm not alone. Seems like people that did not receive their stimulus checks yet frantically tried to update the IRS with their bank account information for direct deposit by using the non-filer return at https://www.freefilefillableforms.com/ in hope that it would result in processing the stimulus check to their banks and overlooked the disclaimer that the non-filer return was not meant for those that will file taxes for 2019 (including myself). The question now is, how to reverse this mistake? Do we now need to file a 1040X (for federal return) and IT-201X (for state return)? I am not so concerned about when we receive the refunds, but rather more concerned in regards to filing my 2019 taxes correctly and timely.

I attached a picture showing the status of my returns from turbotax where it shows my federal return pending and my state return printed (pdfed) and ready to mail.  While trying to efile it seems that the federal retrun went through electronically but 2019 NYS tax return could not be e-filed because there was a conflict where another return was e-filed under my social security number (assuming they are referring to the non-filer return).

Please provide guidance and assistance, thank you!

I made the same mistake and no one could help me, but i figured it out! Go to the non filer application site and press get started, then sign in and then press start over on the top right corner then it will ask you if you are ok with deleting everything and you press yes and then it will show that you never started anything. hope this helps!

Were you then able to e-file correctly? Or did this just clear that form from irs.gov?

Thank you so much! I just delete my non-filer return, but my e-file still can't go through due to the duplicate SSN. Have you run into the same problem?

Thank you for the advise.  How long did it take before you were able to e-file your returns?

Unfortunately, if you accidentally submitted the non-filer form but you really need to file a 2019 tax return you will not be able to file your 2019 tax return electronically.

Also, you will need to file Form 1040X, rather than Form 1040.

The non-filer submission was intended for taxpayers who truly did not need to submit a tax return for the tax year, and as such it created a very simple tax return submitting a $0 tax return.  This is true whether you originated your submission from the TurboTax site or the IRS site.

This means that you now have a tax return on file with the IRS, and to submit your true return, you will need to amend it by mail using Form 1040X.

To file an amended return, as a best practice, I recommend that you first obtain a copy of your IRS transcript here: IRS Transcripts to verify that your return contains only the 0s.

Your transcript should be available approximately 4-6 weeks after you submitted your non-filer submission.

Once you have this information, you can then prepare your amended tax return.  If you used the TurboTax site to submit your return, you will be able to use your TurboTax account that you created to work through your amended return.

If you used the IRS site, using our downloaded software will provide a better amendment experience as it is easier to create the original return necessary prior to creating the amended return.  You can purchase that software here: TurboTax Download Software.

For more complete information on how to amend a tax return please see this article: How to File an Amended Tax Return.

This is the misleading statement right here.  I admit that I didn't read past this!

Free File and Economic Impact Payments for Non-Filers

If you would normally file a 2019 tax return, you can still use Free File now.

While this does create a need to amend your federal tax return - no return was sent to any state tax authority, so this does not create a need to amend your state tax return.  You will file your IT-201 (or other state return) normally and amend only your 1040.

Can the state return be mailed immediately? Or should they be mailed out at the same time?
