Penalties for failure to file extension on 10/15/24

If we are unable to file on the extension due date (10/15/24) because of personal circumstances (health, CA wildfires making records inaccessible etc.) but we do not owe money because we have overpaid  (i.e., through withholding and estimated payments), what happens? Are we charged a penalty for failure to file even if we owe no money?

Hi,

Not worry, if you are in a federally declared disaster area, you qualify for an automatic extension.

No, you are not charged a penalty if you do not owe tax.
