Paying interest on the Accrual basis for Series I bonds

I have a series of I bonds that for the past 23 years I have been recording the annual interest on my income taxes.  Last year, 2022, TurboTax allowed me to do so.  This year, 2023, Turbo Tax insists on a FEIN number.

Yes, you can enter interest income without entering an Employer Identification Number (EIN), if you enter the information manually.

Here's how to do that:

  1. Sign in to your TurboTax account.
  2. Select Wages & Income.
  3. Scroll down to Interest on 1099-INT, select Start or Revisit to the right.
  4. Select Add Investment.
  5. Answer Yes to Did you have investment income in 2023?
  6. On the screen Let's import your tax info, select Enter a different way at the bottom right.
  7. Select the interest tile, then Continue.
  8. Select Type it in myself at the bottom.
  9. Enter US Treasury as the name and the amount of interest in box 1.
  10. Select Continue, then answer any remaining questions in the section.
