one of my dependents (student, teen) filed their own return, selected "someone else can claim me as dependent" but it didn't transfer to the return, mine rejected. Fix?

We looked at his info and confirmed he checked the boxes. when looking at his return, the boxes are not checked. My return was rejected, how do I fix this?

The "fix" is that your own return that claims your son must be filed by mail.   His SSN is in the system as having been used on a tax return, so any attempts to e-file with his SSN on your return will be rejected.   Later after his return has been fully processed he can amend it and make sure that box is truly checked.   You do not have to wait for him to amend---it will not help.   Print, sign and date your return in ink, and mail it in.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
