One employer gave me 2 1099 forms under 2 different company names

the total from both is over 12000 is that legal

Yes, they can give you multiple 1099's if you did work for 2 different companies, (ie a parent company and a subsidiary) or the company changed names or ownership during the year.

It is quite possible for an owner to have several businesses.   Is there something wrong with the 1099 forms (is the total correct)?
