NY State sent check for Interest owed to me on my 2020 refund. Where do I enter this interest?

I received a check for about $20 dated 1/21/2021. The stub says: "Interest that is owed on your refund due to COVID-related changes to the deadline for filing your income tax return."  I see that the 1099-G from NYS I have says: "The box 2 amount doesn't include: ...interest paid by New York State on an overpayment".

This $20-ish is interest income, right?  In TurboTax, should I enter it under State and Local Tax Refund Summary, because it is related to my refund? Or under Interest and Dividends, even though I do not have a 1099-INT? - Thanks.

Enter it under Interest and Dividends since it was income to you rather than part of your refund.

Enter it as if you received Form 1099-INT and the interest was reported in box 1.

Use these steps:

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
  • This opens a box where you can type in “1099-INT” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here) and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to 1099-INT
  • Click on the blue “Jump to 1099-INT” link
