Noncash charitable contribution details not transferring to Form 8283

I entered eight charities to receive noncash contributions and entered all information correctly.  The correct total shows on Schedule A.  However, the information for only seven charities has transferred to From 8283.  Using the forms mode does not allow me type in the missing information.  I have gone back to the step-by-step process and erased all original entries and then re-entered them, proofing carefully to ensure that all information was entered correctly and questions answered.  The problem persisted -- not all charities transferred to Form 8283.  The TT phone representative did not know why this was happening and could not propose a fix.  Can anyone help?

I'm using TT desktop with Windows 10.  Deluxe version of TT.

Can you see the scroll bar on the worksheet? Are all the charities showing on the worksheet? I entered 8 charities with no problem. I see the total on my worksheet and then go to sch A and see the same amount on line 12.  Since your line 12 is correct, it implies that the program is carrying correctly.

Hi Amy,  thank you for answering.  I see my seven charities listed on the worksheet, and the total agrees with line 12 of Schedule A.  However, only six charities are listed on form 8283.  Page 1 of that form has the first four charities, and when I add the fifth charity, it appears on page 2 of 8283.  However, when I add charities 6 and 7, charity 5 is bumped off.  I have tried deleting everything and re-entering in case there was an entry mistake I did not catch the first time, but the same thing happened.  I do not know why not all charities transfer to form 8283 and TT help desk could not figure it out.  If you have any other insight, please advise.  Many thanks.

I would like to take a deeper look at this. However, I need a diagnostic file which is a copy of your tax return that has all of your personal information removed. You can send one to me by following the  directions below:

TurboTax Online:

Sign into your online account.

Locate the Tax Tools on the left-hand side of the screen.

A drop-down will appear. Select Tools

On the pop-up screen, click on “Share my file with agent.”

This will generate a message that a diagnostic file gets sanitized and transmitted to us.

Please provide the Token Number that was generated in the response  and @AmyC  to notify me.

TurboTax Desktop/Download Versions:

Open your return.

Click the Online tab in the black bar across the top of TurboTax and select “Send Tax File to Agent

This will generate a message that a diagnostic copy will be created.  Click on OK and the tax file will Please provide the Token Number that was generated in the response  and @AmyC  to notify me.

How do I contact AmyC (tax expert at Intuit) to give her the token number that she requested?

Just like this! you have to put the @ symbol in front of my name for me to get the notification. Please send the token number and @AmyC for me to find you

Amy, to where do I send the token number?  When I click on @AmyC it brings me to the message board with your replies, which I believe is a public space.   I do not see anywhere to enter the number, and I'm afraid of posting it on a community board or your board, which appears to be public too.

Thank you.

Sorry, Amy, but I do not know what you mean by "just like this".  Can you explain?

Hi Amy, I was told this is not a public posting board.  The token number is 1177237.  If you can solve the problem that I wrote about, I would be very grateful.

Thank you.

Hi! I have your return and all the information turns into xxxx so it is a little more complicated to track things. I see 8 charities listed for cash contributions. I see a bunch of charities listed for non-cash contributions. When I look at the 8283 copy 1, A-D are filled in. Copy 2 only shows 1 charity. This means I am only seeing 5 charities on the 8283. It seems that you can see 7 listed so there is an immediate discrepancy.

Since you have Forms mode, let me get you to do something that showed me a possible issue.

  1. Update your computer program - go to the black bar, select Online, select Check for Updates
  2. Open your return
  3. Go to Forms mode
  4. Scroll down to Schedule A on the left side
  5. On the Sch A, scroll down to the charity section. Select the block for your noncash contributions.
  6. Right click and select Data Source
  7. When the box pops up, I see a long list but only 6 show dollar amounts.
  8. I feel like the problem is in this list.
  9. You need to delete extra forms or fill in missing information.
  10. Hopefully, this will clear up any internal issues and get things straightened out

If you still need help, reach out again.

Hi Amy,

Thank you for your message.  I followed your directions.  When I clicked on Update your Computer Program , it said "your software is up to date" so that was not a problem.

Then I went into Forms, Schedule A and right -clicked on the relevant number.  It brought up a drop-down menu which included Data Source, but all the menu items were greyed out so I could not click on anything.  Therefore that did not work.

I can see the missing information on the forms and have tried multiple times to manually type in the information.  However, when I click on the box to enter, it becomes light blue and it will not allow me to enter anything.

On Friday I spoke with a TT representative to ask a question on a different matter.  The representative was named Yichun.  After she gave me the answer on the different matter, I told her about this problem, and she took some time to trouble-shoot it but she could not find a solution. She then took a few screenshots of the relevant schedules/worksheets (with my permission) and said she would escalate it to another department and call me back after she had an answer.  She called me this afternoon and said that TT now recognizes the problem is due to a defect in TT programing, and that it has now been submitted for correction to the programmers/coders.  She said that it would take quite a while to fix and test the program before an update could be released.

She mentioned a work-around if I could not wait for the release of the corrected version.  The work-around involves entering a dummy charity for a $1 as the fifth entry on the list of the non-cash contributions, and that dummy charity would push the others to show up page 2 of Form 8283.   I had thought of doing something like that myself, but was concerned it would cause a problem with the IRS and delay my refund.   If I do not enter a dummy charity (to be called "Fix for TurboTax defect) to force the other charities so show on page 2, my alternatives are (1) wait for TT to issue an update with the corrected version, or (2) print out the return, hand-write in the information that does not show, and mail it in.  Both alternatives would result in a much longer wait for my refund, which is fairly large.

If you have any further insights or suggestions, please let me know.

Thank you!

I bumped into the same problem, I had 16 visits to the thrift shop and only13 appeared on 8283.

The total on schedule A is correct,  but 8283 is missing 3 of the 16.  I deleted one and retyped it in,

and a different set of 13 appeared.  This seems to be a real turbo tac bug.

sorry for the typo, turbo TAX.

This is for all intents and purposes the same as the issue I posted last night
https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/tax-credits-deductions/discussion/two-odd-bugs-associated-with-charitable-contributions/01/3198484#M308316

but I also mentioned some oddities about the "VM" (valuation method) as well.

@AmyC  I have encountered same issue, except I only discovered after efiling, when I went to print my entire tax return for my records.

Because I was using TurboTax ONLINE I couldn't have checked the actual forms before submitting.  The printed Form 8283 omits a couple important donations, including one that justifies over 70% of my deductions!  Form A and 1040 has correct amounts.

When I called about it, they said it was glitch in the way it printed, and not to worry.

But reading this thread has me worried.  Please advise on how to remedy.

I have the same problem.  It is definitely not a glitch in printing.  I was told that TT was working on a remedy but it would be a while before an update is released.

I was able to catch the issue of missing donation(s) on Form 8283 because I printed the forms before e-filing.  I then used a work-around by inserting a "dummy" donation for $1 as the fifth donation, as the 5th was the donation that was not showing up on the form.  I used the desktop version.  I know this does not help you, so I really hope someone at TT can suggest a remedy to you.

agree that the 8283 bug has been corrected, thank you

the perhaps related but less important vm bug described in https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/tax-credits-deductions/discussion/two-odd-bugs-associated-with-charitable-contributions/01/3198484#M308316

has not been corrected

great if that can be corrected as well, but honestly it's a lower priority
