My wife just received a 1099-nec for an internship in 2020. Do I enter this in miscellaneous taxable income? or is this actually the wrong form and I need a 1099-misc?

The 1099-NEC is the right form, and I can help you to post it.

The IRS has reintroduced Form 1099-NEC as the new way to report self-employment income instead of Form 1099-MISC. This was done to help clarify the separate filing deadlines on Form 1099-MISC.  The new 1099-NEC form will be used starting with the 2020 tax year.

In TurboTax Self-Employed you will post this under:

  • Income & Expenses
  • Self-Employment Income & Expenses
  • If you've already started entering the business you will select REVIEW
  • Select Add income for this work
  • Under Common Income
  • Select Form 1099-NEC

You will not be able to enter a 1099-NEC in the TurboTax Deluxe version.  The 1099-NEC is for self-employed individuals and you will need to upgrade to TurboTax Self-Employed version.

In TurboTax Self-Employed you will enter this under:

  • Under Income & Expenses.
  • Select Self-Employment Income & Expenses.
  • Select Add income for this work.
  • Under Common Income.
  • Select Form 1099-NEC.
