My wife is not working, im the sole breadwinner for the family... i have a son... how can i maximize my credits and deductions.... am i supposed to file jointly or separately?

how is it different?

You should file jointly even if your wife has no income. In the vast majority of cases, filing jointly is more beneficial than filing separately. By filing separately, you lose a number of credits and deductions.
