You can use the federal ID number that is listed in box "b" if there is not state ID number listed on your W2 in box "15".
This might work on paper but on the turbotax online software, it will not allow you to enter the Fed ID in place of a state one as the format is not the same. I have the same problem and so far no solution.
other Turbo Tax representatives say you can just put in "9999999" but on the actual online-software it says entering 9999999 will flag your return and it will be rejected. HELP
It needs your two letter state and then you can use the federal number. Do not use dashes or slashes and stop your entry after nine digits.
When I tried entering the fed id in place if the state id I got a character limit error. All the other state ids from my other W2s are all 7 digits. Am I supposed to drop the first 2 numbers and the dash from the Fed id leaving the 7 digit number and use that? (State of MN) if it makes a difference.
Yes, it does work. My cx's return went right through with no problems with the ID number again.
