My Maryland state software in Turbo Tax Desktop is asking that I pay for the state. I get one free state with my purchase (purchased disc at a retail store). It worked for other member's of my family. However, when I go to complete another return, the Maryland State is no longer available and asking me to pay another $44.00.

You did Maryland returns for other people? Must be something about this person’s return. Save the return and reboot your computer. Then open that return and try again. Maybe it thinks you need a different state like another state starting with M. Check the address under Personal Info.
Or call suppport, <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1899263-what-is-the-turbotax-phone-number">https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1899263-what-is-the-turbotax-phone-number</a>
Here’s another thought. Do you have another computer you can install it on? You can copy the .tax2017 file from the original computer and try downloading the free state again.
Did you try rebooting your computer? Updating the program? Go to Menu item Online-Check for Updates.
Or start their return over new. Go to File-New and try it in a new file.
I believe I know what the issue but will still need your help. Somehow, and I don't know how or why it is showing the state as District of Columbia, instead of Maryland. I looked at the other returns, and they all were filed using Maryland. Is there a way to uninstall District of Columbia and reinstall Maryland?
It shows DC as the installed state? Was the other returns for DC? If you open a different done return does it have a MD return in it? I think you better call in to figure this out.

Once the state is downloaded and installed you should be able to use it for all returns filed for the same tax year. Did you check the download file here ?
