My sons biological dad is asking for our sons social security number. He said turbo tax is asking for it. My son lives with us full time. Why would turbo tax ask this.

Why would turbo tax ask the biological father for sons social security number even though his biological mom ( my wive ) has the child full time.

It sounds like the father is trying to claim your son as a dependent. Generally, that would be the only reason why the program would be asking for a SS#

@mlgudis If a parent enters a child's name and answers the interview questions such that the child is not a dependent, Turbotax does something stupid and asks for the SSN even though they are not a dependent.  It is not needed in this case.  if you have custody more than half the year and you have not agreed to share the dependent exemption, your ex does not even have to list the child on his return, and the simplest thing to do is go into the personal info page and delete the dependent.

It may be asking for it because your son is still his son. If you are going to claim him on your taxes and you think that his dad may be trying to do the same then file your taxes first  and then give him the Social Security number. TurboTax will make sure he can't file for your son after you do. I went through the same thing last year.

He has placed on his taxes that he has dependents so in turn turbo tax has asked for the dependents information. Now whether he is putting that you have an agreement to claim the child or not is a different story but could hold up your taxes once you file because they'll red flag
