My son is 18 in high school, made $159 and had $0 withheld. I am claiming him as a dependent. Based on the amount does he need to file his own tax return?

No, your son is not required to file his own tax return. He will not receive anything back since he had zero tax withheld. You are not reporting his $159 either. Your dependent's earnings are never reported on your tax return.
