My son goes to school out of state, works part time, but I still am his primary support. Can I still claim him

Yes, you can claim him as long as he didn't provide more than half of his support.  He must have lived with your for more than 6 months in 2016, but the months that he is away for school count as months living with you. And if you can claim him, you can claim the education expenses/credit for him (form 1098-T).
