My son drove for Lyft, will the IRS accept his bank statement as evidence of gas bought?

He doesn't own the car (I do) so he can't claim standard miles right?

Yes.  If the expenses are reasonable and ordinary for the job/services performed the IRS will accept most and even all of the expenses should there be an audit.  The will know what it takes to earn this income.  The expenses should be used on the tax return with a record created from the bank statements so that you do have detailed backup for your entries
