My Smartcheck has one error on Form 8889T. The error is "Form 8899T: Original is marked as estimated". There is NOT any entries marked as estimated. How do I fix this?

As you know, a field on the 8889-T has been marked as estimated.

I was going to tell you to check all the entries to see which one is marked as estimated, but it seems you have already done that.

Rather than spend more time redoing what you seem to have already done without success, it would be probably be faster to just delete your HSA info and re-add it. Please read the following:

The safest - although brute force - way to fix this is to do the following in this order:

1. make a copy of your W-2(s) (if you don't have the paper copies)

2. delete your W-2(s) (use the garbage can icon next to the W-2(s) on the Income screen

*** Desktop***

3. go to View (at the top), choose Forms, and select the desired form. Note the Delete Form button at the bottom of the screen.

*** Online ***

3. go to Tax Tools (on the left), and navigate to Tools->Delete a form

4. delete form(s) 1099-SA (if one), 8889-T, and 8889-S (if one)

5. go back and re-add your W-2(s), preferably adding them manually

6. go back and redo the entire HSA interview.

Hi, although you found an alternate solution I just "accidentally" discovered a much simpler solution, so perhaps it will help others:

The problem appears to have be that I had marked it as "estimated" in the Q&A but the error-check screen that asks you to unmark it in the form. For some reason this doesn't propagate it back to the Q&A.

When I went to the Q&A page titled "Let's enter <your name>'s HSA Contributions" the value was still marked as estimated (right-click menu). After unmarking as estimated it in the Q&A the error checking passed.

This is with the 2020 Windows desktop version, just in case that matters.

WHY HAS THIS ERROR IN THE FORM BEEN ALLOWED TO PERSIST FOR YEARS NOW?

I ran into the same "marked as estimate" issue. I returned to the page to turn it to final but it doesn't save as I exit the HSA screens in turbotax. Need fix for this bug!

To remove the error message about "estimated" figures, delete Form 8889-T and reenter it.

To do this please follow these steps:

TurboTax Online

  1. While in your return, click on Tax Tools > Tools (in the black bar at the side of your screen).
  2. In the Tools Center, under Other helpful links click on Delete a form.
  3. Click Delete next to the form you want to delete and follow the onscreen instructions.
  4. Once you have finished deleting the desired form(s) click the Continue with My Return box (in the lower right of your screen).

TurboTax CD/Download

  1. Go into Forms Mode by clicking on the Forms icon in the top right of the blue bar
  2. In the Forms in My Return list on the left, click on the form you wish to open and delete.
  3. Click on the Delete Form box at the bottom of the screen.
  4. To return to the interview, click on the Step-By-Step icon in the top right of the blue bar.

Thank you, these steps fixed the issue. Too bad I had to do some re-work but got it all done now.
