My return was rejected yesterday as we didn't have an IRS IP PIN. A new PIN will take 10 days to get. I want to file an extension, but TT will not let me. What can I do?

it is too late to request an extension of time.

If your return says you owe, you should pay now.

visit the IRS Make a payment page to pay the exact amount for Balance Due.

There is no penalty for a late Federal return if you are sure you are getting a Federal refund.

A state return (if applicable) would be considered separately, depending on its circumstances and your state's rules.

You said "we" didn't have an IP PIN.   So it's a joint return?    Do both of you have an IP PIN requirement, or just one of you?

Were you unable to register for an IRS account to get the IP PIN online at the IP PIN Retrieval Tool?  Is that why you ordered one to come by mail?  If you haven't already ordered it, see this:

Yes, married filing jointly return. Only my wife needs a PIN. Yes, 100% sure we are getting a refund.

We did go to that link, and it is there that we had to register and wait for 5-10 days to get some piece of paper mail, apparently. We could not do it just online.

OK.  Well, if you are getting a Federal refund, you shouldn't have any Federal penalty for the late return.

Thanks! I just could not find that information anywhere (the point about not being penalized in case of late filed returns). Will TT let me re-file my return once I get the PIN in 10 days? It will be way past any deadlines, incl the May 24th, which is what TT says I have until to fix my return.

Yes, you'll be able to efile when you get the IP PIN.   TurboTax will let you efile through October 15, when efiling shuts down, so you have plenty of time.

The May rejection-fix date is for folks whose return was rejected on or before May 17, and they have a few extra days to resubmit the efile without late penalty (if they owe tax due.)  i.e., their return would still be considered filed "on time" and would avoid a late return penalty.    It's a moot point if someone is due a Federal refund, however, since in that case there is no late return penalty.

Again, with a Federal refund, you don't have to worry about a late return.   You have up to 3 years to claim the Federal refund, but don't wait that long.  😃

You haven't mentioned a state return, but its rules could vary.
