My return is taking longer to be approved, could this be because me and my wife filed separate this year after filing jointly for 9 years?

It can take anywhere from a few days up to 3 weeks or more to move to approved status. This is not uncommon; it just depends on how large of a backlog the IRS is working on. The filing status doesn't matter. They will update the Where's My Refund site as they complete processing and approve your refund. Patience is virtue!

NOTE: If you claimed Earned Income/Additional Child Tax credit on your return, the government is holding those returns until around mid-February. And refunds from those returns will start releasing in late February. You can find more details on that here PATH Act delayed refunds for some filers

My return is accepted but still not approved - is there a problem? Should I be worried?
