my mother has passed and we have not received any final documents from social security or veterans. do we need them to file a final return?

Yes, if your mother passed away in 2024, you will need to gather all of her documents regarding her income for 2024 before filing the final return.

 

You may need to contact SSA  get her forms.  Depending on the type of VA benefits she was receiving, they may not be taxable.  If they are not, you would not need to include them on her return. If she was receiving military retirement benefits they are taxable and would need to be included on her return so you would need to contact the VA to get a 1099-R from them. Do not file prior to getting them as you will need to include ALL income she received in 2024 on her return.

we were able to get the docs from SSA but not without some work  va benefits were non taxable-we checked.  thanks for your help
