My locality name in Box 20 is all asterisks. What do I put there?

No, you can't enter asterisks. If box 19, local income tax is 0 or blank, you can leave boxes 18, 19 and 20 blank. 

 

If box 19 has a number greater than zero, you need to enter a valid locality name in box 20. If you aren't sure what that would be, you will need to contact the employer who gave you the W-2 form. 

 

If you need to go back and edit these boxes, here's how to do that:

 

 

1. Open you return.
2. Select Wages & Income.
3. To the right of Job (W-2), select Edit/ Add.
4. Expand the section by selecting the down arrow to the right
5. Select Edit below the W-2 information.
6. Edit your W-2 information here, then select Continue.
7. Select Continue to return to the Wages & Income screen.
