My legal last name has a space in it and the signature form on turbotax won't allow the space

You can put dash sign in between two parts of your name there, it will work in the same manner as space.

I have the same problem and I think this answer is ludicrous.

How can a legal electronic signature not allow someone's legal name to be entered.  Clearly an oversight and an example of a lack of inclusion at Intuit.  Foreign/Ethnic names should be accommodated.

The IRS's and states' return processing systems dictate what number and letter combinations (including length) will be accepted in e-filed tax returns.

TurboTax programs must comply with those rules in order for you to e-file your federal and sate returns.

My social security card shows my name printed with a space. How is it that the IRS is unable to accept that?

They just don't, that's how.  The IRS has so much else going on, especially right now, that they haven't spent millions (or probably billions) needed to reprogram their miles and miles and miles and miles of computers to accept a space in a name.  It seems simple enough to do, but it really isn't.

If you really don't want to make the change, you don't have to, you can print your return and mail it. But to e-file you have to conform to the computers rules.

Leave the space out. The IRS only matches the first 4 letters, the rest does not matter.

The space is the fourth character in the name. How does that work out? Are they just pulling the next non-whitespace letter?

Probably.  Just leaved the space out.   You will find out when you file. If accepted, then they liked it.  If rejected it will tell you why.

You realize that this affects mostly Hispanics, African Americans and those from foreign origin.  This is exactly what unconscious bias is.  Not thinking beyond your own group of origin.  Sure, let all of those file a paper-based return.

Turbotax accepts my name correctly in the name field, but when I have to sign, it does not accept it.  I am not sure this is totally the IRS' doing.

Take your complaint to Congress and the IRS - they write the law and make the form rules.

You can try entering an underscore ( _ ) instead of a space in your name field.  Blank spaces are often a problem for computers.

I hear you on that! It is some "unconscious bias", though that may be too strong; I think it has more to do with simple unfamiliarity. (I wanted to use the word "ignorance", but that has a negative connotation instead of a neutral one.) Programmers tend to accommodate that with which they are familiar; if they have never had a friend with two-word names, it is not bias to think no one does. This is seen anytime web forms allow use in Canada, but the postal code only accepts five numbers. Names are especially challenging because the British/American of "First Middle Last" is not a global norm. My Spanish and Portuguese co-workers have so many different names it is hard to keep track of them!

My last name is "Mac Leod" with a space, though lots of MacLeods and McLeods go without he space; it's purely preference. That space has now caused two decades of chaos as many online forms—especially in the early days when first setting up accounts and logins—do not allow spaces. And of course spaces never work in email addresses, leading recipients to be unaware that when written, it has a space. If I knew then what I know now, I would have abandoned the space before getting my first driver's license!

While "Mac Leod" is historically Scottish, my ancestors came to Canada and USA more than 250 years ago. I cherish my heritage, but do not consider myself foreign.

The "signing" of the return for efiling is done when you enter in the self selected 5 digit code and NOT what you enter in the TT program to complete the interview ... please just comply with the program requirements to finish the filing and try not to take offense at the system's short comings.
