We ultimately “filed jointly” but on each of our own TurboTax accounts. My return got rejected saying there were duplicate SSNs so I am guessing we did something wrong. Should we have not filed twice through TurboTax? How do we fix this?
If you are 'filing jointly' then you only need to file a single tax return on one of your prior/current Intuit accounts. Filing a second time would show up as an error, because you had already filed once for the current tax year. One of the benefits of filing jointly is that there is only a single tax return for you as a couple -- and the higher standard deduction, of course.
Yes a Joint return is one return combined for the both of you. Just ignore the other account. Were you entered on his Joint return as the spouse or as a dependent? Check at the top of the 1040 that it says Filing Status Married filing jointly and if both spouses are listed.
Was your income entered on the Joint return that was filed? If not you need to amend it to add all your info. You were suppose to enter your income the same way as he did. When you first start to enter a W2 or 1099 it will ask who it is for.
