My friend and I bought a home together. It is in both of our names - not in a relationship or married. Do we have to file together for the interest? I'd rather not

I'd prefer to not be involved as I don't pay the interest - just share living expenses.

If you are not legally married then you can only file as Single, regardless of your living arrangements.

In this arrangement, only the person who pays the mortgage can deduct the mortgage interest paid as an itemized deduction on Form 1040 Schedule A.
