My EITC seems incorrect. Is this a miscalculation by TurboTax?

EITC phase-out range begins at around 30k. I have 3 qualifying children. My AGI is below 30k. How come my EITC only $3,010?

The quickest way to verify the amount of EITC included on your return and determine if there is a problem would be to take a look at it.  However, no one here can see your tax return unless you provide a diagnostic copy of your tax file.  The diagnostic file will not contain personally identifiable information, only numbers related to your tax forms.

If you would like to provide us with the diagnostic file, follow the instructions below and post the token number along with which version of TurboTax you are using and what states you are filing in a follow-up thread.  Posting a screenshot of the token number would be useful to prevent it from being redacted.

Use these steps if you are using TurboTax Online:

  • Sign in to your account and be sure you are in your tax return.
  • Select Tax Tools in the menu to the left.
  • Select Tools.
  • Select Share my file with agent.
  • A pop-up message will appear, select OK to send the sanitized diagnostic copy to us.
  • Post the token number here.

If you are using a CD/downloaded version of TurboTax, use these steps:

  • Select Online at the top of the screen.
  • Select Send Tax File to Agent.
  • Click OK.
  • Post the token number here.

You do not mention how much you earned from working.   The amount you earned from working determines how much EIC you get----everyone does not get the maximum amount.

Well, isn’t my earned income included in my AGI?

Yes---but your AGI can include other income as well--like investment income, unemployment benefits, etc.   Your EIC is based on the amount you earned from working.  Do you have a W-2?  What is in box 1?

Altogether filling jointly 52,511. Minus the standard deduction, AGI is 23,311.

Using the information you provided and the EIC Worksheets and Tables In IRS Form 1040 Instructions, starting on Pag 43 - https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040gi.pdf#page=43

Your EIC credit is $3,010
