My 19 year old meets the criteria for being able to be claimed as my dependent. Do I have to claim them? I'd rather they file their return without being claimed.

If I don't claim my child, and they file a tax return, will they be eligible the 2020 stimulus checks?

If your son meets the requirements to be your dependent, then he will have to indicate that he can be claimed as a dependent on his own tax return, even if you decide to not claim him. You are not required to claim him.

Someone who can be claimed as a dependent cannot receive the stimulus payments.
