My 1099-B is asking for a descriptionin box 1a.... What needs to be entered? nothing seems to work.....

There is some liberty with the entry of this field. Consider using a format that indicates what security and quantity was being sold.

For example if you sold 100 shares of ABCXYZ company, you might have an entry in Box 1A of "100sh abcxyz co"

You generally don't need to include punctuation or special symbols. If using the example above, the Stock Ticker symbol was ABCX, then you could also enter "100sh ABCX" into Box 1A.
