I feel your pain. I am NOT a tax expert, just someone who has been in a similar situation. You need to file your taxes by the deadline. You don't have this form. You don't know how to get this form. Time is running out. Here is what I would do:

1. Report the amount  on Form 8949 as 0. This form reports sales and exchanges of capital assets. You don't think there were any sales or exchanges.

2. Buy audit assistance from TurboTax for $45. If you are audited and questioned, a tax professional will attend the audit instead of you and defend you to the IRS. Tax pros don't show any emotion for the IRS to home in on like sharks smelling blood in the water.

Good luck!

P.S. If 0 is not accepted, make up some other small, low number. You just gotta do the best you can in an unreasonable situation!

@mw10932719 I can help you.

First of all, TurboTax will automatically generate Form 8949 when you enter your inherited 1099-B.

  • The cost basis of inherited stock is generally the market price of the stock on the date that the benefactor died.

In rare cases, the executor of the estate will make a special election to treat the stock differently. Check with the executor to be sure.

see the thing about entering me 1099-B is it has almost none of the information required for turbotax unless im missing something, all my 1099-B has is box 1a info, general info about me and the payer, and then cash liquidation of a small amount which is all this 1099-B is for
