Moving to SC from NJ

Moving to Sc from NJ middle of august. How do I file for 2021? Can TurboTax handle or do I need an accountant?

Hi Jprebichthank you for joining the "Ask the Experts: Moving" special forum today.

Congrats on the upcoming move in August.

For tax year 2021, you will need to file a part year SC return and a part year NJ return if you have income in both states.

You do not need an outside accountant. TurboTax will handle your state filings in great accuracy.

Please refer to the below article on how to do it.

How do I file a part-year state return?

https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/state-taxes/help/how-do-i-file-a-part-year-state-return/00/26057

SC income rates range from 0% to 7% while NJ 1.4% to 10.75% depending on income level and filing status.

Depending on where you are on the tax brackets, you should max income (earned and unearned) in the lower tax state.

How do I allocate (split) income for a part-year state return?

Hope this helps.
