Married Filing Jointly when partner is a contract employee

Can you file jointly when one partner is a full time employee while the other is a contract employee? If so, how do you do this?

Hi Shaynagip,

Thank you for reaching out to Intuit's TurboTax Ask the Experts Day!  Yes you can file jointly in the situation that you mentioned.  The spouse who is an employee would input their W2 into the "Wages and Income" section of Income and the spouse who is self-employed or a contractor would input their 1099's and other income and business related expenses into the "Business or Self Employed" section of Income.  Most likely the self employed income and business related expenses would be reported on Schedule C.

Hope this answers your question.  Have a great day!

For the 1099 contract employee filing jointly, they still have to pay the quarterly taxes. How does that work with filing jointly?
