Married filing joint on fed tax live in n. Carolina wife works in north Carolina and I work in Va .how do we file our state returns? nc says joint and va says separate ?

married filing joint on fed tax live in north Carolina wife works in north Carolina and I work in Virginia .how do we file our state returns? Virginia says you have to file separate returns and north Carolina says you have to file the same as you filed on federal. so would this be a north Carolina state filed jointly and a Virginia filed separate just for the husband. can you do this?
