Made a mistake adding another w-2

@MinhT1 I didn’t file my 2018 taxes, as I was filing my 2019 taxes I saw there was an option to add another w-2 so I added the one from 2018, I only had the w-2 to add. The refunds added together and I received the tax refund and I didn’t get any notice that anything was wrong, I was wondering if this means that my 2018 taxes were filed or do I need to make some changes?

You should not have added the W-2 from 2018 on your 2019 return.

Doing so has led to a larger tax liability as you only have the 2019 standard deduction for income from both years. Reporting your W-2 from 2018 on a 2018 tax return have let you have the 2018 standard deduction.

You would be better off amending your 2019 return and filing your 2018 return.

If you believe your W-2 is incorrect, it's best to contact your employer to have is corrected. If they do not correct it, visit IRS.gov for options or read on:

If by the end of February, your attempts to have the W-2 corrected by your employer are unsuccessful, you can request that an IRS representative initiate a Form W-2 complaint. Call the IRS toll free at 800-829-1040 or make an appointment to visit an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center (TAC).
