One of the advantages of desktop software is the ability to e-file up to 5 separate returns. Also, if you want to file a joint federal return, but wish to or need to file separate state returns, desktop software is advantageous for that as well. (You can use a separate account to create a "mock" return for the spouse who needs to file a separate state return).
