Just want to make sure I'm not missing anything!

Me and my wife file jointly.

For 2022 she had 2 different W2s (she changed jobs)

I had one W2 and I have 2 Schedule Cs for small businesses I have (which I have been filing this way for years).

We also moved states in 2022. Moving from a state with personal income tax requirement to a state without personal income tax requirement

I've been doing our taxes for years and overall I am comfortable with it but I mainly just want to make sure (based on the above) there are no credits or anything I might not be aware of. Just don't want to leave any money on the table.

Please let me know if you have any recommendations for big/obvious things I should double check.

Thanks!

With the exception of your wife changing jobs, it sounds like most of your federal return is pretty straight forward.

The states are where you want to focus. (I'm basing this on both states having income tax requirements)

  • You will want to be sure that the taxes are allocated correctly.
  • You will have to allocate income based on where you lived at the time.
  • You will have a filing obligation in both states.
    • You owe tax in the state that you work in.
    • You also owe tax in the state that you live in.
    • You get a credit in the state that you live in if you work in a different state.
    • Post your new home state first so that credit can be carried over.
  • If you're working in Online TurboTax you can preview your state summaries and your completed 1040
  1. On the menu bar on the left that shows.
    1. My Info
    2. Federal
    3. State
    4. Review
    5. File
  2. Select Tax Tools
  3. On the drop-down select Tools
  4. On the popup menu
  5. Select View Tax Summary
  6. On the left sidebar
  7. Select Preview my 1040. see a state summary.

These are key areas of your 1040

Line 15 - Taxable Income

Line 24 - Total Tax.

Line 25 - Withholdings.

Line 33 - Payments including Credits.

Line 34 - Overpayments.

Line 37 - Tax owed.

To return to the entry screens press Back on the sidebar.

Thank you!
I should have clarified, we are moving from a state with personal income tax requirement to a state without personal income tax requirement

With the info I added about state income tax are there any other things you'd suggest looking at or double-checking? Thanks

Indicate in My Info at the beginning of the tax return which states you lived in during the year. File as part-year residents for the first state

Double-check the entry of your income to make sure that the portion of your income that was earned in the first state is entered and taxed. The W-2s from jobs in the taxing state need to be assigned to that state.

If income from Schedule C was split between two states, assign the portion of the income to the first state that was earned there from self-employment.

We recently moved from AZ to TX so I was pleased to see that when I am checking whether I should Itemize Deductions or use the Standard Deductions, TurboTax has a built in function that can estimate the amount of sales tax I paid with only a few receipts to determine my sales tax rate. It was almost $2000 this year for us. The sales tax you pay is an Itemized Deduction. We had no extraordinary purchases (e.g. buying a boat) so the built in estimate function only required a single input.
