June of 2024, I paid $2046 for what I owed on 2024 taxes. IRS applied that payment to my 2025 taxes, How do I claim that payment on 2025?

I think you mean in June 2024 you paid your 2023 tax due.  Or did you pay an Estimated payment for 2024?  We are doing 2024 returns now.

To enter Federal or State Estimated Taxes Paid, including a state estimated payment made in January for the prior year, go to

Federal on left or at top (Personal for Home & Business)

Deductions and Credits

Then scroll way down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid

Estimated Taxes - click the start button

Federal Estimated payments should be on 1040 line 26.

So have you paid the 2023 tax due you thought you were paying?  Did you get the 4 1040ES slips and thought they were to pay the tax due?  They weren’t to pay the tax due.  They were estimates to prepay the next year’s tax due so you don’t owe so much again.

That would be reported when you file your tax return for 2025. You can enter that in the Deductions and Credits section, then Estimates and Other Taxes Paid, then Estimates. In that section there is an option to enter Federal estimated taxes for 2025. If you are talking about 2024, then the same would apply but you would choose the payment for 2024.

So I opened 2025 section that you indicated, I do not see the option for Federal estimated taxes for 2025?

It’s for 2024.  It should say 2024.  2025 won’t be until next year.  I think she posted the wrong year.  You made an estimated payment for 2024 the tax return we are filing now.  It goes by the calendar year.

Yes I grabbed the last 1040 ES slip which they then applied to 2025!!  I then had to Pay the rest of 2024 with another slip.  How do I show that payment on 2025 taxes???  Thank you

It's not exactly clear what you were paying the taxes for in June, 2024, although it would make sense that it was for 2023 tax return.

If the payment actually belongs to your estimated taxes for 2024 they can be entered by following the steps in the link.

If you are unsure: You could make a phone call to the IRS. Some items are difficult to change and this may be one of them that takes  time and effort on your part. Try calling very early or late for the lowest hold times.

They are open 7a -7p local time.
