Many state forms are not finalized so you cannot e-file your state return until they are ready.  There are also a number of federal forms that are not yet finalized so you have to wait for them.  Click on Review to see what forms you still need in order to e-file.

There really should be no rush to file--the IRS will not be accepting/rejecting returns until January 28.  Many tax documents such as W-2's, 1099's, 1098's, etc. have not been mailed out yet. You may not have everything you need until mid-February.  If you file too early and then find out another important document just arrived in your mailbox, you have to go through the agony of amending your return--which takes about 4 months.

If you file your federal return before you file your state return, you will not be able to file your state return until your federal return has been accepted by the IRS.  Then you will need to log back in to your return and file the state yourself—TurboTax will not file it automatically.

I am led to distrust Intuit over this issue. TurboTax wants you to check for updates before proceeding every time you log in, although all updates have long since been finalized by state and local governments. Is it because Intuit wants to access your inputs?

This is ridiculous. I'm told to go to the menu and click on the "Check for Updates" button. It doesn't exist.

My check for updates does not exist either

Requiring a "check for updates" before being able to e-file leaves me suspicious that Intuit is doing this so they can download my tax return to their database. I'm going to quit using TurboTax in the future because of this.

Yes why is this such an issue? Please make your menu bar (check for updates) an actual button so we can ALL find it. What am I suppose to do here HELP!!!!!

The recommended answer is misleading, another reason to generate mistrust of Intuit. No state changes their forms after January 31st. So, if you check for updates on February 1st, there should not be any reason to have to repeat this except if Intuit is mining data from users each time they update.

what is the answer to “where is the Check for Updates” button?

My 2020 TurboTax Deluxe is doing this. I'm told I can't e-file because they are not ready but website says e-file was ready 2/12/21. What gives?

@LouGoo Is there a form you need to file with your tax return that is showing available as of 02/12/2021?

Actually fixed the issue by going against a lot of posts I've read. I installed the update to Windows 10 20H2 and stopped having the repeated calls for updates, the 'waiting for Windows Installer' messages and inability to add state to return.

Getting this error for 2021 MA Schedule B and it appears that Massachusetts has already published this form (as of 02/13/2022 available on mass.gov website).

IMO Intuit/TT should be more responsive in getting these forms posted considering that they collect billions from their tax filing software every year plus get access to full financials for tens of millions of users used to up-sell multiple other services/products (amongst other things).
