Did you have any adoption credits carried forward from prior years or did your employer provide any reimbursed adoption assistance?

If so, this could be the reason the message is coming up.

If you had a carryforward, I would recommend confirming the amount of the Adoption Credit Carryforwards from prior years to ensure the amounts pulling in are correct going forward.

You would do this in the federal interview section.

  1. Select Deductions & Credits
  2. Scroll down to All Tax Breaks
  3. Select You and Your Family
  4. Click Show more and select start (or revisit) under Adoption Credit
  5. Select your child's name, and click edit.
  6. After going through all of the screens, you will see a page which says Here's your adoptive child info.
  7. Click done at the bottom of that page.  This will get you to the carryforward screen.
  8. On this screen, please confirm the amounts you have from your prior year tax returns to ensure the carryforward amount for the 2020 tax year is correct.

If your employer paid for any adoption benefits, they would have been reported on your W-2 Form under box 12, Code T.  You would need to enter the applicable information in the federal interview section.

  1. Select Deductions & Credits
  2. Scroll down to All Tax Breaks
  3. Select You and Your Family
  4. Click Show more and select start (or revisit) under Adoption Credit

If your employer incorrectly coded your W-2 Form, you will need to contact them to obtain a corrected W-2 Form.

This feature doesn't seem to be working this year.  Is this a known bug that TT is working on?  We have a $10,000 carryover from 2018, but TT won't apply it to our tax liability for 2021.

Found some help in other threads....when you get to the adoption credit page - enter in ever child adopted in the last 5 years, not just 2021.  Later prompts will ask for the finalization year.  It's such a relief that this worked!

Our adoptions (3) were finalized in 2015, but TT still wants to give us the carryover credit for 2021. I thought that would have been done after five years whether we had carryover credit left over or not.
