got denied for having an incorrect IP PIN but I've never needed one before and looking it up seems to point to identity theft but I haven't reported that ever
Did you enter an IP PIN? If you do not have one, then you would leave that section blank.
The 6 digit PIN is generally the IP PIN, which is your Identity Protection Pin. This is not the same as the 5 digit number at the end of the return that you make up. If you are just walking through the return and came to that question, you can skip it and say no you do not have one. If your return was rejected because you do not have one, then the IRS has issued you an IP PIN and you will need to follow the steps here to retrieve your pin
I've been denied due to needing one and even after requesting one and adding mine its still denied its not telling me which person needs it
If IRS denies you for that, it means IRS has assigned you an IP PIN.
You have to go to the IRS.gov website to retrieve your current IP PIN for 2023 tax return.
Do not request a new PIN.
If you get it and are still denied, your spouse will have to do the same.
