@gjeffreywilliams137 ,

are you filing your return from Uruguay ?

Generally IRS will not use foreign telephone numbers to contact you .  Thought  Uruguay has country code of three digits  (398) are code of  1 digit and  seven digit for telephone number -- 11 digits.  What are you trying to do ?

no, that did not answer my question and turbo tax still refuses to accept an 11 digit phone number. unless i enter a 10 phone number i cannot proceed to finish and file my taxes.

The IRS requires a US 10 digit phone number.  You may have to ask a family member or friend to use their phone number for tax filing purposes.

@gjeffreywilliams137 , while agree with my colleague @RobertB4444  that the best answer is to use  an US number,

(a) You have not answered whether you are filing from Uruguay  or from the  US  .  If  from the USA  why are you trying to use an Uruguay  number for contact ---- IRS does not call international numbers.   Nor will IRS transfer refunds to an international bank account .  They will gladly mail you a check , whether to a  domestic or a foreign address.

(b)  As I get your  phone number issue  is because, while US software  expects 10 digits consisting of   three digits for  area code  and 7 digits for the  local/city telephone number , Uruguay like quite a few countries with  smaller   telephone population use  7 digits for the telephone number, single digit for area code  and has country code of three digits -- so in your case you ended up with eleven digits   If you just want to keep the software happy , use  10 digits  as follows --- 00X ( where X is the area/city code ) and  then the  full seven digits of the local number .

However , even if you are filing from Uruguay, I would take the advice from @RobertB4444  to heart and use an US number.

I do not believe  anybody here can give you a better response than @RobertB4444 .

That is my point of view -- keep it simple.
