Is there a way in TT to amend a Fed return without going through the state return information?

Hi TT Community,

I need to file 1040X for 2018 and 2019, but TurboTax is requiring me to go through the state income tax section (apparently), which I do not use. (My state has very simple tax returns.)

Can anyone suggest how to avoid working through the multiple TT pages for the state return and simply complete the 1040X and print it?

Thank you,

N

When you are in the TurboTax Amend software, you can select the Federal tab at the top and it will take you out of the state interview.

You can then select the Other Tax Situations tab and choose Amend a Return to begin amending your Federal tax return.

Please indicate where "Federal" can be clicked on. I do not see it on this page.  I recall that in prior years, such a link existed, but I do not see it in TT's updated online software, per the below.

Thank you

Where is "Federal" to click on?

I apologize.  Log out of your return and follow these instructions:

  1. Sign in to TurboTax.
  2. Scroll down to Your tax return & documents (you may need to select Show), select 2019 and then Amend (change) return.

This should take you to the Federal beginning.

Turbo Tax sent me an email asking if the above answer solved my question.

No, it did not. Per the screenshot, there is no place where I can selected "Federal." Rather, I have to go through the whole State return, and then delete it at the end.

Turbo Tax used to be a simple, quick process. Now, Turbo Tax has set it up to be even more time consuming, particularly given the multiple efforts it attempts to extract more payment (than necessary or wanted) from its customers. This approach, in my opinion, is very disrespectful, and will likely lead me to use another provider (the IRS e-filing system, which two sons say is very easy, and free) for my 2021 taxes.

This is particularly the case given that Turbo Tax's software for my 2020 return required me to essentially misstate answers in order to get around mistakes in Turbo Tax's software (had to do with a Beneficiary SEP-IRA RMD issue).

Call me a disgruntled customer, but after nearly 20 years of using Turbo Tax, I'm ready to be done with it.

(And Turbo Tax, so long as you send me emails asking if my problems have been solved, I'll keep responding to them -- at least until I add TT to my spam filter.)

The reason they make you go through the state doing an amended after you amend the federal is because the federal and state returns must match.  The two government entities share information that is in your return to be sure they match.

If you have a state return in TurboTax along with the federal, then they have to make the assumption that both were filed with the numbers in them.

If you are changing the federal return by amending, then the state return will also need to be changed to match and file.

If the state return was not in TurboTax to begin with, then they would not see a need to causing you to amend the state return when you amend the federal return.
